Why is my iPhone stuck indefinitely on the "Preparing Update..." phase during an iOS download?

This happens when an update file downloads incompletely or gets corrupted due to a brief Wi-Fi drop. To fix it, head over to Settings > General > iPhone Storage, find the iOS update installation file in the list, delete it, and restart the download from scratch.
